I'm just curious what DOS software people here still run on a regular
basis. Are there any people here still running DOS for general daily
usage?

Myself I only occasionally boot into DOS. Key software that I still
use in there would be the programs for an EPROM programmer and an
IC tester, as well as Open Cubic Player. For fun, I sometimes type
up letters in an obscure word processor called TasWord installed
on an old 8086 portable, which also spends some time running Tetris.

I run VDOS under Windows since M$ made the user-unfriendly decision to
get in the way of running any 16-bit program, including all DOS
applications ... that worked fine for decades. The current generation
of users may not even remember being able to do such a thing. Some who
can remember running 16-bit applications are still pissed about the
lack of backwards compatibility.

I run a version of BASIC under VDOS because the DOS environment
doesn't require all the extraneous setup for I/O (creating user
interface windows, controls, objects, and dialogs. Nor is it necessary
to keep track of the handles for all those components) that a Windows
version of the same dialect of BASIC often needs.

DOS can make doing simple things much less cumbersome than allowed by
Windows and the extraneous complications it imposes.

No, as I couldn't get wifi. (there was 1 wifi usb? card that supported DOS
but I didn't buy it)

I run a DOS box under XP for some commandline programs I wrote years back
plus some I've just developed. see clax.

Nowadays, I use DOS softwares solely for programming purposes and ran them
in DosBox. So I still keep some Assembly, Pascal, and C software development
softwares. And I still code from time to time.

On daily basis, I use a home made compiled Clipper database program for
store inventory (run under DosBox too). Although I've planed to upgrade it
to web based entirely.

I also use DOS for rescue system in a separate bootable partition. It
contains hundreds of small programs such as text viewers & editors, archive
tools, disk tools, graphic tools, system diagnostics, DOS system specific
tools, etc. Basically all software categories which are relevant for
emergency use, plus a view handy tools.

I have recently upgraded my word processor to WordPerfect 5.1, the last
word processor I could do any real creative writing on. LibreOffice and
Linux are great, but as soon as I'm stuck on a thought it's too easy to
switch and start surfing or checking email. To do that on DOS requires
me to consciously quit WordPerfect (and writing) first.

The word processor is an old 386SX with amber Hercules display.
Just enough networking to print and backup via ftp. Gets the job done,
and usually seems faster than my 2 core Athlon (don't know why... :-) ).

Still get distracted sometime by DOS programming (A86 & Turbo Pascal).

Cheers,
~~Andrew

Hi! I have a DOS/Win16 laptop and like to install programs on it. It seems to be useless otherwise. I *do* use DOS and DOSBox for gaming and apps., though.

I use freedos by itself and also on Puppy Linux 4.2 with DOSEMU.
My old DRDOS 6 system croaked so I switched to freedos.
For most of what I do it's simple, boots quick, and gets the job done.
